PE

Potential Energy is energy which requires some catalyst to unlock its power.  In my last post we discussed the potential benefits of green living.  Today I am going to discuss ways in which to unleash this potential within your communites.  As an aside I will discuss how SustainabilityOnline will focus on this in the coming months.

In order to unlock this potential you must see the potential that exists within the places where you live.  What I mean is view your surroundings as an ecosystem in which you are a part.  Your action can both contribute and/or detract from its success.  Green living promotes sustainable ecosystems which in turn promotes economic growth, community growth, and environmental growth within communities.  One way to nurture growth is thru something we refer to as Urban Renewal 2.0. (UR2.0) or  "micro landscaping".   UR2.0  is concerned with developing opportunities for members of communities to work collectively toward creating accessiblity to the outdoors and reclaiming community space which would otherwise become blight.  In other words  UR2.0  is a sustainble activity which stimulates economic growth, communal growth, and enviromental growth, respectively.  Within all places there is infrastructure which can be harnessed for the  good of its residents.  Reclaiming the open spaces of vacant lots, roof tops, etc. is one way in which the potential benefits of communities can be unleashed creating jobs, creating quality spaces, and creating cleaner healthier neighborhoods.

Green Living

Sustainability is Green Living.  Wikipedia defines sustainability as "the long term maintenance of well being that has environmental, economic, and social dimensions.", and that,  "It encompasses the concept of 'union' that implies an interdependency relationship and a mutual responsible position with all living and non living things on earth.".  Also, as you might remember, we have noted that it is a process for living.

At present many communities are struggling to overcome the downturn in the economy, business leaders and politicians struggle with decisions on what the best strategy is to stimulate economic growth and more jobs.

We propose Green Living.  By embracing a sustainable lifestyle you help yourself and you help your community. One example of this is recycling.  Many communities have embraced doing as much recycling as they can. This has lead to the creation of new industries and jobs, and has lead to cleaner greener communities. Another example would be the adoption of renewable energy policies wherein communities elect to decrease their use of fossil fuels overtime. By embracing Green Living you can unleash the potential for a tremendous amount of economic activity. This potential lies within each of us. In future blogs we will discuss  renewable energy production, water  conservation, high technology integration, green building, and sustainable activities as ways to unlock this potential.

Welcome To Sustainability Online

Sustainability Online is located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Bridgeport also known as the "Park City" has suffered like many other Northeastern cities, after the loss of its manufacturing sector, from lack of development and urban decay. Our mission is to focus people on the benefits of sustainable lifestyles. In other words we will show you ways to establish sustainable activities which address economic, communal, and environmental problems prevalent within urban areas.

Today we embark on the first step of a long journey toward a more sustainable existence. Sustainability is a process of living which can address many problems of people who inhabit 'places'. A sustainable lifestyle can facilitate the resolution of many of our most pressing problems. Sustainability can address the economic issues which impact household budgets, the extra costs of doing business, and job creation. It can address the communal issues which are tied to the viability of our neighborhoods, and that drive the best uses of community assets. Lastly, it can address the environmental issues caused by the impact of pollution/contamination and decisions to source of goods locally or not.

We look forward to building on the dialogue we start here today and hope that you will give us feed back so that we can share it with others.
